STILLWATER FISHING
LLYN TEGID (BALA LAKE)

Measuring 3.5 miles long and three quarters of a mile at its widest point, Llyn Tegid is Wales’ largest natural lake. The lake is a popular place for water sports such as paddleboarding, canoeing, windsurfing and fishing.
The lake and surrounding area will be very busy at times, but it offers some different fishing opportunities for our members. Llyn Tegid is fishable all year subject to the relevant species close seasons. There are multiple coarse species in Llyn Tegid, which once held the British record for perch. The pike and trout are known to grow to specimen sizes – pike to 30lb plus and ‘ferox’ trout to 15lb have been caught including a huge fish in January 2026. Salmon and sea trout migrate through the lake.
Llyn Tegid is also one of only a few places in the country where still-water grayling can be caught.
The legendary gwyniad is unique to the lake. This is a deep water plankton feeder and seldom caught on rod and line.
A BDAA season ticket (and our block tickets) gives the holder the right to fish Llyn Tegid.
-
Species present include pike, perch, roach, brown trout, grayling, eels, ruffe, gwyniad, along with minnows, bullheads and loaches. Gudgeon are rare. Sea trout and salmon migrate through the lake. Large ferox trout are present.
-
Close seasons: There is no close season for coarse fish in the lake, you are allowed to fish for them all year round. These include pike, perch, roach and grayling. Trout are in season from March 20th until September 30th inclusive.
-
Baits allowed are: Worm, maggot, groundbait, lures/spinners, fly, dead/frozen sea bait(mackerel etc.). Sweetcorn and similar are also allowed. Live baiting is allowed but the bait MUST be caught in the lake and on the same day. Maximum of 6 hooks, which means 2 trebles, 3 doubles or 6 singles.
-
The wardens permit fishing from a bivvy and overnight. Full blown camping gear – tents etc. are not permitted.
-
Maximum of 2 rods per angler.
-
Access is from most of the lay-bys on the main road side and from the SNP parking ground at Llangower on the B road side. Other access will be over private land and will be a private arrangement between you and the landowner for which a fee may be charged.
-
Boats are allowed for fishing and they can be powered by electric trolling motors. Petrol outboard engines are not permitted, these are for rescue boats only.
-
BDAA or SNP do not hire boats. Bala watersports on the foreshore may be able to do this.
-
As a guide, normal levels are between 1.2M and 1.6M. Above 1.9M the water begins to cover the grass in front of the parking spaces and by about 2.3M the parking area will be covered. At this level the amount of shoreline around the lake will be noticeably reduced making access difficult in places. These figures are guidelines only and not recommendations. They are given so that you can check conditions before travelling any distance. SNP Llyn Tegid page is here. This has contact details for the warden and a webcam. This is a view out of the warden's office. At normal levels you will see two strips of grass between the camera and the water.
